☆Boston marriageの関係にあるふたりの女（Enid SpenserとSilvia Bennet）がNew EnglandからNew OrleansのCreole一家であるDumarais家にやってくる。異父兄弟のJacquesとJocelinはそれぞれEnidとSilviaとの関係ならざる関係を深める。Jocelinの妹JeanneはJacquesへの愛情を胸にたき火の炎が燃え移って火車の中、死んでしまう。結末はJocelinを諦めたSilviaがついに病気から回復して小説を出版し、それをEnidに捧げる、というもの。久々の良作で、読み終わった時には思わず、よかったねよかったねと声に出して涙ぐんだ。全てのキャラクターが美しく、また大変人としても魅力的に書かれている。萩尾望都の漫画のようであった。文体はChopin（というかFlaubert）的で、あまりにも透明感があって美しい世界観と、ナレーターが見せるちょっとした距離感とアイロニーがなんとも言えなくいい。特筆すべきはPreludeの官能性（10歳足らずの少年のJocelinの色っぽさは圧巻）とJeanneの死（彼女を助けようとするJacquesに火を燃え移らせないように湖畔を走り逃げ惑ううちに焼死する）のシーンか。Mardi Grasももちろん出てくる。ちなみにKate McCulloughの "The Boston Marriage as the Future of the Nation: Queerly Regional Sexuality in Diana Victrix" は1997年に書かれた論文だけれどもAmerican Literature所収だけあって、とても完成度の論文。こんなものを書いてみたいものだ。McCulloughの論点はlocal colorによくある南北のmarriage plot（北=男と南=女がunionを作り上げるという）のジェンダーがこの作品では逆転していて、北のモードとしてのBoston Marriageが来るべき国家のパラダイム的セクシュアリティとして確立されている、というもの（それに同時代のsexologyのlesbian=sexual invert説がいかにこの作品で脱臼されているかが接続されている）。"[T]he individual body comes to figure the national body for Converse, as for many of her contemporaries, but unlike her contemporaries Converse figures the Boston marraige not as degenerate but as advanced, the sameness of Enid's and Sylvia's bodies signaling the unadulterated Americanness of the New England New Woman" (78). "What is being celebrated as American here is a concentrated, homogenous energy, undiluted across time (as represented by Jacques) or across ethnicity or race (as negatively represented by Jocelin)" (82). さてこれより説得的かつおもしろい読みはできるものか…
